Foreign doctors will be able to receive visas allowing them to practice in the United States, after the Trump administration quietly changed a policy to exempt them from a travel ban.

A Department of Homeland Security policy stemming from a travel ban that was put in place in January had frozen decisions on visa extensions, work permits and green cards for citizens of 39 countries. As The New York Times reported last month, some physicians were subsequently placed on administrative leave by hospitals, and many others faced the imminent threat of being forced to stop working.

Late last week, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services updated its website, without a formal announcement, to indicate that physicians are no longer subject to the processing hold. In response to questions from The Times, D.H.S. confirmed in a statement that “Applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing,” meaning that the agency will resume issuing visas and work permits for the group.

The United States faces a shortage of about 65,000 physicians, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the deficit is expected to surge over the next decade as Americans live longer and more doctors retire.

President Donald Trump’s administration has mandated what it calls “enhanced” security checks for immigration applicants, according to internal guidance sent ​to the employees of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which ‌is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
Internal guidance by USCIS directed officers to refrain from approving any pending cases that have not undergone the expanded background checks. The ​guidance was first reported by CBS News.

“Effective April 27, 2026, USCIS ​will begin receiving enhanced criminal history record information (CHRI) for all fingerprint-based ⁠background checks submitted to the FBI’s Next Generation Identification system,” said an ​internal USCIS email from last week seen by Reuters. The email was sent ​to USCIS’ Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate staff.

The enhanced checks ​will affect pending ⁠applications for which immigrants submit fingerprints, like applications for permanent U.S. residency or green cards and naturalization.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday appeared closely divided over whether the Trump administration could immediately end humanitarian protections that have allowed hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians to live and work legally in the United States.

President Trump has moved to terminate a program, known as Temporary Protected Status, that has allowed migrants from more than a dozen troubled nations to settle temporarily in the United States. His inflammatory language about immigrants featured prominently in the court’s arguments.

The two cases before the justices involve more than 350,000 Haitians and about 6,000 Syrians whom the Trump administration has sought to expel from the United States, potentially forcing them to return to dangerous conditions in their home countries.

The court’s ruling, expected in late June or early July, will also most likely have implications for immigrants from other countries whose protections the administration has sought to terminate, potentially affecting more than one million people.
The president’s plan to end T.P.S. protections is part of his broader effort to crack down on legal and illegal immigration by strictly limiting the resettlement of refugees, cutting illegal crossings of migrants seeking work and denying asylum claims from people crossing from Mexico into the United States.

The lives of hundreds of thousands of people were thrown into limbo after the Trump administration hit pause on reviewing their visa, green card, work permit and citizenship applications.

The pause is targeted at those born in one of 39 countries, including Nigeria, Myanmar and Venezuela. The U.S. imposed travel restrictions on most of those countries after an Afghan national shot two National Guardsmen on a Washington, D.C. street in late November.

Five months in, and the impact has been catastrophic for many people from those countries already living in the U.S., whether they’re going to school or working in lucrative labor sectors like oil and gas, technology and medicine. NPR spoke with more than a dozen people on condition of anonymity, because they all fear adverse consequences for their immigration applications if they speak publicly. They asked NPR to not use their full names and name them only by their first initials.

Their experiences mirror each other: sudden financial insecurity, months of unemployment, academic and professional opportunities lost — and a crippling anxiety over the abrupt inability to live or work legally in the U.S.

The pause is just one part of a larger effort by the administration to restrict legal forms of migration and boost mass deportation of immigrants.

Marlene Noble, 35, has lived more than 30 years of her life in the United States.
After being abandoned by her biological family after a hurricane hit her home country of Haiti, she was brought by Catholic Charities to the United States, where she was later adopted.

But when she turned 18, she learned that her adoptive family had not properly submitted the adoption and immigration paperwork, leaving her in legal limbo.
She spent years trying to fix her status — including filing for citizenship on her own in her mid‑20s and consulting multiple lawyers — before eventually applying in 2020 for Temporary Protected Status, which she was granted in 2023.

But now, Noble finds herself again facing uncertainty as the Trump administration’s move to end TPS — which provides work authorization and protection from deportation to people whose home countries are deemed unsafe — faces a high‑stakes test at the Supreme Court amid the administration’s immigration crackdown.

“America is my home, and it has been for 31 years,” Noble told ABC News. “It took three years for me to get granted TPS. So a lot of hard work went into this, just to have it potentially ripped away from me ... It’s kind of cruel and inhumane to rip that away from us.”

Noble says she is “scared” about Wednesday’s Supreme Court hearing, where the justices will consider whether the administration acted unlawfully in seeking to terminate TPS for Haitians and other groups.

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must unpause green cardapplications for dozens of immigrants originally from countries on the current travel ban list, potentially giving others affected by the ban a chance to get their cases heard.

A campaign tracking the pause, called Project Press Unpause, estimates USCIS had collected over $1 billion in fees from over 2 million applications it was not processing.

“This sends a clear message that this policy is arbitrary and capricious. Most of us have been in the country for 5+ years with no issues with the law, dedicated tax payers and were even granted national interest waivers because of the work that we do,” a Project Press Unpause spokesperson, who gave their name as Lavida, told Newsweek.

“We are legal immigrants (the kind of immigrants this administration claims to only want), have contributed positively to the US economy but are now placed under an indefinite hold because of our country of birth - something we cannot control.”

The Justice Department is targeting at least 300 foreign-born Americans to possibly revoke their citizenship as part of the Trump administration’s effort to ramp up denaturalization, according to a person familiar with the investigations.

A Justice Department official told NBC News the number was in the hundreds.
NBC News previously reported that the Trump administration was dramatically expanding an effort to revoke U.S. citizenship for foreign-born Americans.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency within the Department of Homeland Security that’s responsible for legal immigration, sent experts to its offices around the country or reassigned staff members to look for possible cases where citizenship could be revoked. The goal was to supply between 100 and 200 potential cases per month to the Justice Department, which prosecutes them, NBC News reported.
Federal prosecutors in field offices across the country are working on the effort, the DOJ official said.

“The Department of Justice is laser-focused on rooting out criminal aliens defrauding the naturalization process,” a Justice Department spokesperson said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the Department is pursuing the highest volume of denaturalization referrals in history. We are moving at warp speed to ensure fraudsters are held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — An appeals court on Friday blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order suspending asylum access at the southern border of the U.S., a key pillar of the Republican president’s plan to crack down on migration.

A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found that immigration laws give people the right to apply for asylum at the border, and the president can’t circumvent that.
The court opinion stems from action taken by Trump on Inauguration Day 2025, when he declared that the situation at the southern border constituted an invasion of America and that he was “suspending the physical entry” of migrants and their ability to seek asylum until he decides it is over.

The panel concluded that the Immigration and Nationality Act doesn’t authorize the president to remove the plaintiffs under “procedures of his own making,” allow him to suspend plaintiffs’ right to apply for asylum or curtail procedures for adjudicating their anti-torture claims.
