"Real quick, can I deduct this on my taxes?" Taxes are confusing, and a tax attorney has all the answers for you, right? Well, maybe, but you're getting ahead of yourself. While tax attorneys are there to help with tax legality questions, you need to start by asking your CPA or enrolled agent (or even TurboTax and H&R Block help) these questions. They work more closely with your specific tax situation - and they sign your return - so, they're gonna have the most accurate, nuanced answer for you. Tax and estate attorney John Strohmeyer will explain more about when and how to come to your tax lawyer with these kinds of questions.

You're probably familiar with most real (physical stuff, land) and intangible (IP, marks) property, and have them included in your estate plan. But many people forget about their DIGITAL assets - social accounts, photos, domains, and more. These are increasingly a part of our lives, and increasingly valuable!

Estate & Tax Attorney John Strohmeyer walks us through some general considerations for addressing digital assets in our estate plan:

- Inventory of digital assets
- Password records (hopefully using a password manager)
- Terms Of Service – know what your estate can even do with certain accounts, particularly with domains
- How do people access your digital assets?
- Finally, what should happen to each of these once you’re gone?

You're probably familiar with most real (physical stuff, land) and intangible (IP, marks) property, and have them included in your estate plan. But many peop...

You've got an estate plan, and you don't plan on dying soon. That's great! But if something did happen unexpectedly, does that plan still fit your needs and goals? Is your situation the same as it was when you drafted those documents?

Board-certified Tax and Estate Attorney John Strohmeyer has some thought exercises you can do to stress-test your current plan, and find any gaps or inconsistencies NOW, before there's an issue.

- Periodically check value of assets and distribution
- Find original documents
- Find your actual assets
- Check for unclaimed property
- Do we need to adjust who is named in the plan?
- How are people going to react to your plan?
- How often should you examine, re-examine, or change your plans?

You've got an estate plan, and you don't plan on dying soon. That's great! But if something did happen unexpectedly, does that plan still fit your needs and ...

I've been getting tons of questions and (sometimes panicked concerns) about potential new taxes being proposed by the federal government, so I here's some guidance and clarity on what President Biden has proposed tax-wise in the American Families Plan. I'll cover:

- Where we are right now
- Potential new Estate Tax and Gift Tax changes
- Sanders' vs. Warren's vs. Biden's proposals
- Retroactive taxes?
- New "Capital Gains at Death" tax and offsets/exemptions

I'll explain these possible new changes and how you can plan to protect more of your estate if the changes are put in place. There's no need to panic just yet, but you should always be informed and prepared for possible tax implications.
