Put your complaint in writing, stick to the facts, and keep a copy. If the person you're reporting is your supervisor, review your policy for another way to file the complaint.

I've seen how quickly an employment situation can become more complicated than it needs to be.

Talking too much, waiting too long, or assuming someone else is handling everything can create problems down the road.

Before an employment proceeding, understand the deadlines, know the limits of your representation, and make decisions based on strategy, not emotion.

Preparation matters. Get organized. Get advice. Know what you’re walking into.

An Internal Affairs investigation can make you feel like you need to prove yourself by being as helpful as possible. I know because I’ve been there.

But cooperation doesn’t mean giving up your rights. Know what protections apply to you, and don’t ignore it if you believe the process was handled improperly.

Going into a legal proceeding can be stressful, especially when your job or career is involved. Start preparing early.

Know your case. Get your records together. Request your personnel file. Keep track of deadlines.

And when it comes to testimony, remember: answer the question you were asked. Don’t guess. Don’t over-explain.

You can’t control everything that happens in the room, but you can control how prepared you are.

🔹 Save relevant communications
🔹 Pay attention to what happens after you speak up
🔹 Don't assume issues will resolve on their own

First responders deal with a kind of stress that follows you long after the shift ends.

So when problems with a supervisor, discipline, or your employer come up, they can hit differently. That doesn’t mean you should just accept them because “that’s the job.”
