“We already have a will. Does that mean we’re all set?”

It’s a reasonable question. But I’d want to know quite a bit more before answering it.

When was the will signed?

How are your major assets titled?

Are the beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts and life insurance still correct?

Who can make decisions for you if you become incapacitated?

If you have minor children, does your planning address the practical realities of who could step in for them during an emergency?

A will can answer some very important questions. It simply isn’t designed to answer all of them.

And there’s another issue: your life keeps changing after you sign it.

Children grow up. Relationships change. You buy or sell property. Financial accounts change. The people you once chose for important roles may no longer be the people you would choose today.

That’s why I view estate planning as more than preparing documents. It’s an ongoing process of making sure those documents continue to reflect the family and life they were created for.

If it has been a while since you looked at your plan—or you’ve never looked beyond your will — this week’s article is worth a read.

August is Make-A-Will Month, and that usually puts one estate planning document in the spotlight: the will.

Creating a will can be a worthwhile step. But there’s an important distinction that often gets overlooked:

Having a will is not the same as having a complete estate plan.

A will has a specific job. It doesn’t necessarily control every asset you own. It generally doesn’t avoid probate for assets passing under the will. And it isn’t the document that determines who can make financial or healthcare decisions for you during incapacity.

For parents, there are additional questions to consider about who could care for minor children and how those instructions would work in a real-life emergency.

That’s why I encourage families to think beyond the document itself.

Estate planning is really about looking at the entire picture — your family, your assets, your wishes, and the people who may someday need to carry those wishes out.

This week’s blog looks at the difference between simply getting a will and creating a plan designed around your life.

Every family has a different story.

Different goals. Different concerns. Different people they're trying to care for.

That's what makes this work so meaningful to me.

I'm grateful each time a client places their trust in our office to guide them through such important decisions. Helping Hawaiʻi families create plans that reflect their values — and giving them confidence that the people they love will be cared for — is truly an honor.

August serves as a helpful reminder that many families still haven't taken the first step toward estate planning.

Often, it isn't because they don't care.

They're busy. Unsure where to begin. Or they simply haven't had someone they trust encourage them to start.

If you've been wondering how to have that conversation with someone you love, this week's article offers practical suggestions that can make it feel much more natural.

A thoughtful conversation today could make a meaningful difference for a family tomorrow.

We've all heard it...

"I'll get around to it next year."

Then next year becomes the year after that.

If someone in your life has been saying the same thing, this week's blog offers a few simple ways to start the conversation without making it uncomfortable.

In case you missed it...

This week's blog isn't really about estate planning documents.

It's about conversations.

Specifically, how to encourage someone you care about to begin planning without creating an uncomfortable moment.

If you've ever wanted to help a friend or family member prepare for the future but weren't sure how to bring it up, this article was written for you.

If it reminds you of someone, consider sharing it with them.

The referrals that mean the most to me don't come from advertising.

They come from families I've had the privilege of helping.

When a client introduces a friend, neighbor, or family member to our office, they're sharing something much more valuable than a recommendation.

They're sharing an experience they found worthwhile.

My goal has always been to make estate planning approachable, educational, and personal for Hawaiʻi families — not something people dread or avoid.

If someone you care about has been talking about getting their planning done, sometimes all someone needs is an introduction. Article: https://bit.ly/3RT3ecG

Q: "How do I encourage someone I care about to finally create an estate plan?"

The answer usually isn't more convincing.

It's understanding what's holding them back.

Sometimes they think they're too young.

Sometimes they believe estate planning is only for wealthy families.

And sometimes they simply don't know where to start.

A thoughtful conversation can go much further than a lecture.

In this week's article, I share practical ways to talk about estate planning with family and friends in a way that feels genuine, respectful, and helpful.

If someone you care about has been putting it off, I hope you'll give it a read.

Once you've created your own estate plan, it's hard not to think about the people you care about who haven't.

Maybe it's your parents. A close friend. Your adult child who's recently married or welcomed a baby.

You know planning would make life easier for them — and for the people they love — but finding the right way to bring it up can feel uncomfortable.

The truth is, estate planning doesn't have to be a difficult conversation. When it comes from a place of care instead of urgency, it often opens the door to meaningful discussions about family, responsibility, and the future.

This week's blog explores thoughtful ways to encourage someone you love to begin planning without making the conversation feel awkward or overwhelming.

If you have family or friends here in Hawaiʻi who have been putting it off, this article is a great place to start.

One of the best parts of my work is getting to know the families I serve.

Estate planning isn't simply about preparing legal documents. It's about listening to what matters most, understanding each family's goals, and helping them create a plan that brings confidence and peace of mind.
