Florida moved the police-call threshold from $500 to $2,000 in apparent damage on October 1, and any injury still requires a call. Here is where our attorneys land on the three situations in this post.

$1,500 at the scene, $2,600 at the shop: a gray area, because the law looks at apparent damage. When in doubt, call.

$800 of damage and a sore neck: call. Any injury triggers the rule, whatever the dollar amount.

$400 scrape, nobody hurt: no police call required. You still exchange information, document everything, and may owe the state a written report within 10 days.

An independent medical exam (IME) after a car accident or injury isn't as independent as it sounds, because the insurance company picks the doctor and pays the doctor.
