In response to a recent post on the NACDL in the Defending S*x Crimes Community, I responded to a New York Times Article that is highlighting this issue across the country.

I said as follows:

We are having a lot of these cases in South Florida, in particular Delray Beach.

We have used multiple ways of tying these social media vigilantes to the police.

I have written a few blogs on this and would be happy to help or collaborate with anyone on this matter.

I saw the post by Jacqueline Goodman who I've attempted to contact to discuss.

The last I heard is that she has quite a few of these cases in her office and is probably the most knowledgeable on these mattters.

OH WAIT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CECILIA PAYNE.
Cecilia Payne’s mother refusd to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge.
Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because at that time there was not much exposure for women, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard.
Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called “the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy.”
Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomr, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne—after telling her not to publish).
Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work.
Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generatons of women to take up science.
Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her.

AVOID AN INDEPENDENCE DAY DUI

The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our freedom and to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is also a time we get together with friends, family members and loved ones for barbeques, picnics, parades and fireworks displays. Alcohol is often involved in these gatherings, and as such we need to be aware of the consequences of drinking and driving and what we can do to avoid a DUI arrest.

With the understanding that law enforcement officers will be out in increased numbers, patrolling Broward, Palm Beach and Dade County roads, and that you may encounter a sobriety checkpoint, it is of the utmost importance that you take care when taking part of Independence Day celebrations. This includes both Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights and weekend festivities. The following are a few helpful tips I can offer:

Call a taxi, use a driving service, or designate a driver if you are planning on going out.

Stay informed about DUI patrols and checkpoints in your area by checking online.

If you are pulled over by a patrol officer or stopped at a checkpoint, stay calm. Sober or not, being stopped can be an unsettling experience. Try to remain calm and be polite to the officer or officers you deal with.

Watch what you say and do if you are pulled over. The officer may ask you questions about how much you have had to drink, in an attempt to determine whether you are intoxicated. You are under no obligation to answer such questions and should politely refuse.

If you are asked to step out of the vehicle, do so. If you are asked to perform field sobriety tests, you have the right to politely refuse, which we recommend if you believe taking these tests may give the officer a reason to arrest you for DUI.

If you are arrested, take the breath test or blood test. Refusing a chemical test after an arrest may result in license suspension and other penalties.(Keep in mind, a first refusal is a one year license suspension which you can appeal and/or apply for an immediate work permit, whereas a second refusal to take a breath, urine or blood can result in another criminal charge, I.e. Refusal to take test, which is a misdemeanor)

Invoke your right to an attorney. If you are arrested and taken into custody. Remember that you have the right to remain silent and you have the right to an attorney. Invoke these rights and protect your interests.
