Practice Financial Self-Defense

When people face financial difficulties, it can become overwhelming deciding what bills, if any, to pay. When that happens, it is often helpful to step back and take a look at the big picture before you continue paying your bills as usual or as they come due.

If you have lost your job or have a reduced income, it may be important to prioritize your debts and develop a short term strategy to get you through.

Make sure the things that matter most get paid first ... food, utilities, house, car etc. Maybe try to hold back some cash reserve instead of paying an unsecured debt. While your credit cards or bill collectors may call and harass you more, they are actually the lowest in priority.

So the important thing is to stay calm and realize that you have options. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone sooner rather than later. You might be able to take some important protective measures now that could benefit you in the long run.
