This is one of those questions that comes up every fall—especially if you bought or sold a home this year!
🏡 PROPERTY TAX BILLS ARE ARRIVING — DON’T PANIC!
It’s that time of year! Property tax bills are hitting mailboxes, and if you bought or sold a home this year, you may have a few questions.
🔑 If you have a mortgage with an escrow account:
You may still receive the tax bill in the mail. Your mortgage company may be responsible for paying it from your escrow account, but it’s always a good idea to verify that payment is scheduled.
📦 If you SOLD a home this year:
You could receive a tax bill for a property you no longer own. Don’t automatically pay it — and don’t ignore it either! Property taxes are typically prorated between buyer and seller at closing, so check your closing documents or contact the professionals who handled your transaction.
🏠 If you BOUGHT a home this year:
Make sure you know who is responsible for paying the bill. If your taxes are escrowed, confirm with your mortgage company. If they aren’t, be sure you know the due date and your responsibility.
The bottom line: Receiving a tax bill doesn’t necessarily mean you owe the amount printed on it — but it does mean it’s worth checking.
