🫁 Engineered-Stone Silicosis Is Affecting Workers at Young Ages
California had confirmed 604 cases of engineered-stone silicosis as of July 29, 2026, according to the California Department of Public Health. The confirmed cases included 31 deaths, with a median diagnosis age of 46 and a median age of death of 52.
Silicosis can develop after workers inhale respirable crystalline silica while cutting, grinding, drilling or polishing stone. Cutting and finishing engineered-stone countertops can release high concentrations of crystalline silica dust.
These figures count confirmed cases, not every exposed worker or person with undiagnosed silicosis.
