Is Bail Meant to Punish Someone Before Trial?
Answer:
❌ No.

Bail is generally intended to allow someone charged with a crime to remain out of custody while their case is pending, while helping ensure they appear for future court dates and taking into account other factors required by law.

⚖️ An arrest is not a conviction.

Under our legal system, every person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Because every case is different, judges consider many factors when making bond decisions, including the nature of the charges, public safety, and the likelihood the defendant will appear in court.

✨Today we had the privilege of hearing from the Fresh Access Program and we are grateful they took the time to share their inspiring mission with the Rotary Club of Hattiesburg.

The Fresh Access Program is tackling an often-overlooked need by helping students experiencing “laundry poverty”. Through prepaid laundry cards and detergent, the program not only provides local students with access to clean clothes but also helps by restoring dignity, building confidence, and removing one more barrier to success in the classroom. Even more impactful, every dollar donated is matched by Speed Wash, allowing the program to reach even more students in need.

At Rotary, we believe that Service Above Self means finding practical ways to make a difference, and Fresh Access is doing exactly that. Thank you for your compassion, your vision, and your commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to walk into school with confidence.

Every lawyer starts somewhere.

One of Attorney Tangi Carter's best pieces of advice for new attorneys has nothing to do with case law.

🍪 Be kind.
🤝 Build relationships.
💬 Get to know the clerks, court staff, and even the attorneys on the other side. One day, you'll probably need to work together.

(And yes... she gives a well-deserved shoutout to Jody's Bakery because apparently cookies are a pretty great networking tool. 😅 "Sugar is like crack... don't do crack, kids!" 😂)

The lesson? People remember how you treat them.

Your reputation starts long before your biggest case. Be respectful. Be approachable. Be willing to learn.

And one more piece of advice: Never be afraid to ask questions. Every experienced attorney was once the new lawyer trying to figure it all out.
