Seriously (definitely not seriously), let's talk new truancy laws.

Mississippi now allows 5 excused absences per semester. There are even further limitations on parent notes, including not only whether they'll be accepted but how soon after the absence they will be accepted.

But hold on...

Am I the only one who thinks a time out with a bunch of other moms isn't the worst idea?

💡 Been needing some QT with your bestie but can't find the time because someone's always sick? Problem solved.
💡 Wanna learn/play mahjong but can't break away from homework, supper, bath time, and bedtime routines? I got you, Boo.
💡 The jumpsuits are baggy.
💡 We don't have to wear a bra.
Or makeup. Actually, no real need for personal hygiene.
💡 Someone else will do our laundry.
💡 The balogna sandwiches are often moldy and cost the county about a quarter each, but we don't have to make them ourselves.
💡 Cheetos? Plenty, but we'll need money on our books. Instead of giving the kids snack money, they can give it to us.
💡 No cell phone? NO PROBLEM!
"Sorry, honey, I can't remind you about the kids' appointments. It's like $1.00 per minute to call."
💡 Nap time? Almost all the time!
💡 Been wanting to spend more time with Jesus? You're in luck!
💡 Cinder block walls? If you stayed in a dorm, you are actually comforted by them and can decorate with what you have.

Edited to add: I created this somewhat flippantly in response to the discussion in various Mommy groups. So many parents are anxious and frustrated. The reality is yet to be seen. I know schools will handle the law changes differently, and I hope they will have the freedom to treat each child and each situation individually.

Please, as always, make the best decision you can for your child's health and education.

Twenty years ago our Founder and CEO, Elizabeth Porter, graduated from MC Law with a goal of helping children and families.
