Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more jurisdictions around the Commonwealth "saving money" by having unmonitored recording systems in their courtrooms. Virginia Circuit Courts are a court of record when it comes to criminal proceedings. The record needs to be preserved properly. We appreciate the work that AAERT does to help make this push to keep a Court Reporter IN the courtroom.

PART-TIME COURT REPORTER
*on the job training provided*
Responsible for attending court proceedings and creating a verbatim record by operating electronic audio recording equipment, while creating a time-linked annotation of the proceedings. Adheres to common principles of professionalism to include being punctual and prepared; promoting a professional appearance of yourself and the agency while interacting with legal professionals, and being courteous and civil when interacting with the judge, counsel, parties, clerk's staff, and the public. Remains as a neutral observer during court proceedings, refrains from causing disruptions to the proceedings; and exercises the highest levels of professional integrity in the disposition of job responsibilities. Must be able to work independently, exercising good judgement and discretion.

When I was a little girl, I loved going to the office with my mom! She'd have me erase cassette tapes. Hundreds of them. While I'm thankful we are in the digital age these days, I do wish I had some stashed away for this little helper to experience. She's so excited to have her own job for the day.
