From now through December 7, you can switch plans, change your drug coverage, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or simply confirm what you have still works.

It catches people off guard, but without legal documents in place, an unmarried partner generally has no automatic right to make medical decisions for you.

Or to access your accounts and manage your finances.
Or to inherit your home or property.

In some situations, they may not even be notified in an emergency.

Everything a marriage grants automatically has to be built on purpose here. That means wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and beneficiary designations.

We see this most often with couples later in life who've made a deliberate choice not to remarry.

Your executor handles your estate after you pass away: filing the will, paying debts, distributing what's left.

Your trustee manages your trust, which can start while you're alive and continue long after you're gone.

Your financial power of attorney acts for you while you're living, if you can't act for yourself. That authority ends at death.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and seniors are a primary target. 🚨

Two of the fastest-growing scams right now:

💻 The "tech support" call — someone claims your computer is infected and asks for remote access or payment in gift cards.

💔 The romance scam — a months-long online relationship that eventually turns into a request for money, always with a reason it can't wait.

Both work the same way: build trust, create urgency, isolate the person from anyone who might ask questions.

If a loved one suddenly has a new online friend they can't quite explain, or is making unusual withdrawals, it's worth a gentle conversation.

If you own a business with someone else, here's a question worth answering before you need to: 🏢

What happens to their share if they pass away, get divorced, or want out?

A buy-sell agreement answers it in advance. It sets the terms, the valuation method, and often the funding, so the surviving owners aren't suddenly in business with a spouse, an ex, or an heir who never wanted to be there.

Medicare is health insurance, mostly for people 65 and older. It's based on age and work history, not income. It covers doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions.

Medicaid is a needs-based program. Eligibility depends on income and assets, and for many families, it's the primary way long-term nursing home care actually gets paid for.
