Can you hire a lawyer and skip court on a Virginia reckless driving charge? Not automatically.

Reckless driving is a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia. A conviction can carry up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $2,500, and a possible driver’s-license suspension.

Do not assume your appearance has been excused. Confirm with your lawyer whether the court has waived your personal appearance before the hearing.
