Is your Estate Plan a Trick or Treat for your loved ones?
October 18, 2025|Elder Law, Estate planning, SC Elder Law LLC
It's the time of year when I think about Charlie Brown trick or treating. Everywhere he goes, he gets the same heart-breaking result. He says, "All I got was a rock!" Poor Charlie Brown! He expected candy, but that's not what he got. Sadly, many persons delay putting together an estate plan, or did a basic estate plan years ago, which doesn't reflect their legacy wishes today. At SC Elder Law, LLC we are here to help you.
How do I begin, if I haven't done any estate planning? No worries. Take these steps:
1. Consider your goals and your desires for passing on your estate assets to family members, friends, and charities, when you die;
2. Consult with an elder law attorney at SC Elder Law, LLC. In an hour or so, we can help you match your goals and desires with the best estate planning tools;
3. Direct the elder law attorney to draft the estate planning documents which will effectively put into place your estate plan;
4. Review and sign your estate planning documents with your elder law attorney.
What do I need to do if my estate plan was done more than 10 years ago, or my estate plans have changed due to death, divorce, or devastation in my family? No worries. Take these steps:
1. Locate your previous documents, or determine that you have mis-placed them. If you locate your old, outdated documents, make notes on a separate sheet of paper (don't write on your original documents because this will invalidate them!)
2. Have a general idea about how your current documents are outdated and what you questions you may have about new estate planning options.;
3. Consult with an elder law attorney at SC Elder Law, LLC to discuss your questions and possible changes you are considering. Your current documents may be fine; or you may need minor revisions. A document review by a trained elder law attorney can also reveal errors in your prior documents and changes in the law which may have occurred since your previous estate planning documents were drafted.
4. Direct the elder law attorney to make your requested changes.;
5. Review and sign your new estate planning documents
Don't be tricked like Charlie Brown. You deserve to have a tailor-made estate plan which carries out your wishes and doesn't leave you and your loved ones holding a bag full of rocks! Contact us at SC Elder Law, LLC 864.655-7545 to schedule an estate planning consultation or to update your current estate plan. You will be glad you did!
