So many of us live in wildfire prone areas. Those of us that do know what fire season is like. A question that has come up a lot in my office lately is what do we do with our estate planning documents.

Here at my office I do not normally keep and store original documents except in certain circumstances. I do have hard copies and digital copies stored in two different secure fire and flood proof locations.

But where should you store your original Will and Trust especially in fire and flood prone areas? I always suggest a fire and flood proof safe. These can be purchased in various sizes and various prices but make sure it can withstand high fire heat for an extended time.

There is also the possibility of a safe deposit box. Many banks have very reasonably priced safe deposit boxes. However, be careful with the name on the box. Make sure the box is under the name of the Trust or has a joint owner. States have different requirements as to when and how a person can access a safety deposit box after a person dies.
