Newburg Law has grown.

Steve Milks and Robert Palmer have joined the firm, bringing nearly two decades of criminal law experience each.

Between the three of us, we’ve tried more than 100 cases—and criminal defense remains the focus of what we do every day.

All three of us also serve on the Executive Leadership Team of the Eaton County Public Defender’s Office, where we continue to represent clients while helping lead the office.

So, for everyone who has asked lately: yes, Newburg Law is very much in private practice and accepting criminal cases throughout Michigan.

This was posted yesterday afternoon after we got a phone call from media outlets asking to explain recent reports that Larry Nassar was removed from the registry by the state police.

After my conversations with local media outlets and this instagram post, the reason he does not appear on the list has been accurately reported. But, here is the explanation we gave yesterday afternoon:

This has nothing to do with the Ex Post Facto decision of the recent Michigan Supreme Court Decision on SORA. Nassar is currently incarcerated outside Michigan. Michigan State Police explains that an offender who is not a Michigan resident may not appear on Michigan’s public registry.

That doesn’t mean his convictions disappeared. And his absence from the Michigan registry, standing alone, doesn’t establish that the Michigan Supreme Court’s recent ruling removed him.

The recent SORA decision is significant and worth understanding. But it doesn’t explain everything you see—or don’t see—when searching Michigan’s registry.

Sometimes the legal explanation is considerably less dramatic than social media tends to portray.
