Today we celebrate Juneteenth. More than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, news of freedom finally reached enslaved Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865.
It marks both the end of slavery and the fulfillment of a promise that, for many Americans, was delayed. The 13th Amendment later ensured that slavery was abolished throughout the United States.
As we reflect on this important day, Juneteenth reminds us that America's story is one of continually expanding freedom and striving toward a more perfect union. We wish you a meaningful Juneteenth.
If you want to celebrate locally, join Black Citizens and Friends at Lincoln Park tomorrow afternoon from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. While admission is free, attendees are encouraged to support our neighbors in need by bringing non-perishable food for the Food Bank of the Rockies.
