Since announcing my candidacy for District Court Judge, I’ve had people ask me—and some even try to convince me—to make negative comments about the opposing candidate, Judge Theodore Sandberg.

I have refused, and I will continue to refuse.

The first time I met Judge Sandberg was in a courtroom, long before I ever imagined I would be running against him. I was appearing on a family law matter, and before the hearing, he shook my hand and was cordial and professional.

Then the hearing began.

Judge Sandberg zealously advocated for his client that day in a manner I have yet to match. I walked away from that courtroom with respect for him as an attorney and advocate.

In the years since, I have appeared in Judge Sandberg’s courtroom numerous times. In every one of those appearances, I have watched him treat the people who come before him—attorneys and litigants alike—with kindness, patience, courtesy, and respect.

When I announced that I was running against him, that did not change.

Judge Sandberg has continued to treat me with the same dignity, respect, and cordiality that he showed me before I became his opponent.

Of all the judges I have encountered, personally or professionally, I can honestly say that I have never encountered a judge more consistently courteous than Judge Sandberg.

I am running because I believe I have something meaningful to offer this district and because I believe voters deserve a choice. But believing in my own candidacy does not require me to diminish someone else.

Campaigns can be competitive without becoming personal. We can disagree about who should serve without attacking the character of the person on the other side.

So, when people ask me what negative things I have to say about Judge Sandberg, my answer is simple:

I don’t have any.

I have nothing but respect for Judge Theodore Sandberg, both as an attorney and as a judge.

I hope this campaign can remain focused on what each candidate brings to the bench and allow the voters to make their choice based on that.

Recently, I had the incredible honor of giving a speech at my daughter Trinity’s graduation ceremony. Standing there looking at the young woman she has become, I couldn’t help but think about everything it took for her to reach that moment.

The effects of domestic violence reach far beyond what most people see, and I know personally how deeply and how long those effects can shape a family. But our story is also a reminder of just how powerful one voice can be.

Years ago, one small, incredibly brave little girl found the courage to speak up. She saw things that needed to change and put into words things that even the adults around her struggled to see. Her words led to action, and that action changed the course of our lives forever.

That little girl was Trinity.

She has faced challenges and overcome more than many people will ever know. Through it all, she has shown a courage, strength, and resilience that continue to inspire me. I could not be more proud of the person she has become or more grateful for everything she has taught me along the way.

And now, another chapter begins. Today, Trinity is moving out and heading to college. We are going to miss her more than she knows, but I am also so excited for her—for the independence, experiences, opportunities, and adventures that are waiting for her.

The little girl who once found the courage to use her voice is now stepping out into the world to find her own way. I cannot wait to see where it takes her. ❤️
