In 1977 the Congress enacted the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, FDCPA, to stop abusive, deceptive and unfair debt collection practices by 3rd party debt collectors. The Law protect you against unfair debt collection practices. It is illegal for a debt collector to: - call you an unreasonable number of times, at an unusual time or place, or before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM, or fail to identify themselves; - disclosing information about your debts to a third party; - use abusive language or deceptive methods to collect debts; - contact you after receiving your "Cease and Desist" notice; - make false claim that they are affiliated with any governmental organization; - misrepresent the character, amount or legal status of a debt, or make false accusation of you having committed a crime; - threaten you to take any action that cannot be taken legally, or communicate false credit information; - attempt to collect after they fail to validate the debt, and other violations.
