As Mardi Gras approaches, the Louisiana State Police would like to make the New Orleans community and visitors aware of a concerning crime trend. Reports have surfaced of individuals approaching community members and asking to use their cell phone, claiming that their own phone has been lost. While using the phone, the violator will open a money transaction application and send themselves money before returning the phone to the unsuspecting community member. Additionally, pickpocketing is on the rise, particularly of cell phones in the French Quarter. Having your cell phone exposed in a clothing pocket allows a thief to easily grab the phone without your awareness.

In order to protect yourself from becoming a victim of these crimes, we urge you to fully conceal your cell phone and avoid allowing unknown community members to use your cell phone. If you feel the need to assist, use speaker phone and do not allow them to control the workings of the phone.

Public safety is of the utmost importance, so if you witness anything suspicious or potentially hazardous, please alert the authorities. Remember: if you See Something, Say Something! The public plays a vital role in keeping our communities safe and secure.
