JESSICA’S STORY — PART 1 ⚖️
A few weeks ago, we shared Jessica’s story. After nearly 2 years of trying to finalize her divorce on her own—and multiple rejected filings—she decided to reach out to the Los Angeles Superior court’s free Self-Help Center for assistance.
Jessica says she was told that if she came back again with incorrect paperwork, she could face a fine or even jail time. 😳
Understandably worried, she contacted our office for help. Within a week, we were able to submit her judgment packet, and shortly thereafter, her divorce was finalized. 🙌
But here’s the question: Was the court clerk wrong for telling her that? Or was it simply a very bad day at the Self-Help Center?
⚖️ Attorneys & legal professionals—chime in below. What do you think? Can a self represented litigant go to jail for filing incorrect paperwork?
And there’s more to Jessica’s story… Stay tuned for Part 2. 👀
