Bed bugs are not just a nuisance. In California, they can be a legal issue.

Landlords are generally required to keep rental units fit to live in, and a vermin infestation can make a unit legally uninhabitable. Hotels generally owe guests a duty of reasonable care, which can include inspecting rooms and responding to known infestations.

When a property owner ignores the problem, they may be held responsible for the harm that follows: bites and medical treatment, ruined furniture and clothing, relocation costs, and the stress of living with an infestation.

A lot of the workers we talk to have gone months without a real lunch break. They eat standing up, answer calls mid-bite, or just push through the shift because that’s what everyone else does.

You shouldn’t have to choose between keeping your job and taking the break the law gives you. In California, when an employer doesn’t provide a required meal or rest break, workers are generally entitled to an extra hour of pay for that day, at their regular rate of pay.

Lane splitting is legal in California. It’s one of the only states in the country where riders can lawfully travel between lanes of traffic — and yet insurance companies still try to treat it as automatic fault after an accident.

That’s not how the law works. Lane splitting alone does not make a rider responsible for a crash. Fault depends on what actually happened: the driver who changed lanes without looking, the car that drifted, the conditions on the road.

If an insurer is blaming you simply because you were splitting lanes, they’re counting on you not knowing your rights. We do.
