In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, MHAS happy to share a recent fair housing success victory for our client Roger! Please consider making a donation to support this critical work at www.bit.ly/mham26

Roger is a senior with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs. Last year, he faced an eviction that put his housing and essential care at risk. For years, Roger has relied on a live-in aide for around-the-clock support, allowing him to live safely and independently in his home.

Instead of accommodating this need, Roger’s landlord issued multiple eviction notices claiming that the aide was unauthorized. The landlord also denied a formal reasonable accommodation request and went as far as arguing that Roger could not live independently and should be institutionalized.

MHAS stepped in to advocate on Roger’s behalf and filed housing discrimination complaints. After extensive negotiations, the landlord rescinded the eviction notices and approved the live-in aide. The landlord also agreed to attend a fair housing training and make policy changes to prevent future discrimination against other tenants with disabilities. Through this advocacy, Roger remains safely housed with both the care he needs and the autonomy he deserves.

MHAS’ Project RAFT (Reentry Advocacy for a Fresh Tomorrow) partners with community-based organizations and mental health providers across Los Angeles County to host expungement eligibility clinics for individuals with mental health disabilities who have been involved with the justice system.

MHAS hosted its most recent clinic on April 28th in partnership with Mental Health America of Los Angeles.

These clinics help community members understand whether they qualify to clear past convictions and remove barriers that often stand in the way of stable housing, employment, and long-term wellbeing. For many clients, an old record can make it difficult to move forward—even years after they have rebuilt their lives.

By addressing these barriers, Project RAFT helps create pathways to stability, improved mental health outcomes, and a fresh start.

As the year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank you for your generosity and support. Your belief in our mission empowers MHAS to help clients like Mei fight housing discrimination. Our team advocated for Mei and ultimately helped her obtain a $12,500 award as compensation.

The building's property management also agreed to provide comprehensive fair housing training to all of its leasing staff to ensure that other tenants do not face discrimination in the future.

Fighting housing discrimination ensures that everyone has a fair chance to safe and stable housing and better health outcomes. Housing subsidies make housing more affordable for folks like Mei who have fixed or limited incomes due to their disability.

We are excited to continue this great work in 2026, and we hope that you will support us with a tax-deductible donation at www.bit.ly/mhas-26.

Earlier this week, we shared a success made possible through our Transition Age Youth Medical-Legal Partnership. Today, we're taking some time to share more about this project, including our community partners and the people we serve.

If you would like to support this critical work, please consider making a donation via the link in our bio.

The Transition Age Youth (TAY) Medical-Legal Partnership is a project that combines legal and social services to address the legal barriers that young adults face when transitioning to adulthood.

This transition from childhood to adulthood can be hard for anyone but is especially challenging for youth who are aging out of foster care, experiencing mental health challenges, or lacking a strong support network.

This project increasingly uses litigation, policy advocacy, and other tools designed to challenge the systems that keep young adults in poverty and prevent them from achieving mental health stability.

MHAS is excited to share a recent success that we secured for our client named Mario!

Mario is a young adult who recently celebrated several milestones: he turned 18, graduated from high school, and started community college classes.

In the midst of navigating the complex special education process in college, Mario learned that his Supplemental Security Income (SSI) had been terminated because he aged out.

Mario was referred to MHAS through the Transition Age Youth Medical-Legal Partnership. An MHAS advocate reviewed Mario's case and discovered that Mario qualified for a little-known legal provision that allows young students to continue receiving SSI benefits. MHAS represented Mario during the appeal process and successfully obtained a reinstatement of Mario's benefits.

Interestingly, the judge hearing Mario's case was happy to find this narrow provision of the law useful, highlighting how challenging it can be for youth with mental health disabilities to face these systems alone. Mario was overjoyed and now plans on becoming a social worker to help others. He is also relieved to be able to cover his living expenses while in school.
