People park the car because they think driving it weakens the claim. It usually doesn't.

If the vehicle's defect affects brakes, steering, stalling, airbags, or anything else that could put you or others at risk, stop driving it. Otherwise, you can keep using it. The mileage offset is calculated on the miles you drove before your first repair attempt for that defect, so the ones you add while the manufacturer is failing to fix the car aren't quietly working against you.

What does matter is the paperwork. Keep every repair order, and keep going back to the dealer when the problem returns.

If you drive an Audi Q3 from 2019 to 2021, this one's worth two minutes.

NHTSA recall 26V590 covers a steering rack mounting bolt that can corrode and break. If it breaks, the rack housing can crack and you can lose steering control. The campaign covers 208,724 vehicles in total, across the Audi Q3, the VW Tiguan and the VW Atlas.

The fix is out. Your dealer replaces the right-side mounting bolt free of charge. VINs have been searchable on NHTSA.gov since September and owner letters go out in November, so you don't have to wait for yours to arrive before booking it.

Book it, and keep the paperwork. If you've heard noise from the steering, felt play or a clunk, or already been to the dealer about it, that history matters more than the repair does. Send it to us along with the recall paperwork and we'll tell you where you stand.

Three steps, every time you take the car in.

One. Book the appointment online and write out every issue you're having, then print it and keep it.

Two. At drop off, check that the repair order lists every single issue you put in that request.

Three. At pickup, check that each one was addressed. It doesn't matter how. "There's nothing wrong with it" still counts, as long as it's on the paper.

Don't show up unannounced, don't leave without a repair record, and don't let them work on the car without documenting the visit.

A low first offer isn't an insult. It's a test.

In this one the manufacturer came back without a buyback, called it their best and final, and waited. Countering on the day would only have moved us toward their number.

So we didn't. We'll do the work and go back for what the case is actually worth. We are not desperate for a settlement, and we're not going to compromise a client's recovery to close one today.

An early offer from the manufacturer feels like validation. You were right, something was wrong, and here's a number.

It's a starting point. It's normal for a first offer to arrive low, and what the manufacturer is really testing is whether the person receiving it knows what the case is worth. From the outside, that's a hard number to know, and the offer counts on that.

You don't have to accept it, and you don't have to argue with it either. Send it to us and we'll tell you whether it's fair.

When people hear buyback they think of the sticker price and stop there.

It is wider than that. Your down payment. Every monthly payment you have made. The remaining loan, paid off, so the finance company is handled as part of it. Taxes, registration and finance charges. And the costs the car created along the way, like towing, rentals and repair bills you paid out of pocket.

Then the mileage offset comes off, the deduction for the miles you drove before your first repair attempt for that defect. That's the full picture.

Your dealer saying it is not a lemon is an opinion, not an assessment. There is no magic number of repairs. An expired warranty is not automatically the end, because what matters is when the problem started. You can usually keep driving it unless it's unsafe. And asking us questions costs nothing.
