My previous car made me walk in the shoes of a client and realize how terrifying it can be when a car is a deathtrap. At 500 miles my car began shaking vehemently while I was driving. Upon taking it to a BMW dealer, I was informed that nothing was wrong and it was tamper-proofed (a measure implemented by dealers when they suspect that a consumer is tampering with a vehicle in order to cause it to exhibit defects with the goal of asking for a refund). This made me furious. It also made me better understand our clients who are similarly blamed by dealers.

Luckily, in my instance as I drove out of the dealer’s driveway my car began shaking again and the dashboard warning lights illuminated. Minutes later the BMW shop foreman was apologizing profusely for the insult of tamper-proofing my car instead of having fixed it. It took a month to change the entire engine. It’s 3000 miles on the dark desert road driving to Vegas my car began making a loud grinding noise. BMW of Las Vegas told us certain drivetrain components were had broken off and we were lucky the car did not blow up. It took them another month to replace the components. By this time I was scared to keep driving the car and insisted that BMW bought it back or at least replaced it. They refused. We sued. They refused. I continued making lease payments for 8 months while the car was parked and we were in litigation.

The absurdity of their refusal despite the bullet-proof merits of the Lemon Law claim against BMW made me have a deeper appreciation of what our clients go through. All the while I had to lease a new car and make two payments until the case was resolved. Unfortunately, not every person can afford to make two payments, thus this predicament of being stuck with an unsafe vehicle and being refused way out is very burdensome. On a happy note, that case has been resolved and my current car has been very safe and reliable.

Side note: Taking the car straight to the dealer each time it had an issue and taking pictures and videos is what eliminated any possibility of BMW coming up with any defense. We recommend clients to do the same at all times.
