I'm going to clarify a question that I am often asked. What is "AS-IS" on a used vehicle purchase?. It's when it's sold by the dealer with NO WARRANTY. They owe you nothing. All repairs are your responsibility. If the vehicle fails after it leaves the driveway it's your issue - not theirs. They are telling you right up front they are not fixing anything, nor warranting anything.

What is "Dealer Warranty?". These are given by the dealer, and honored ONLY at that dealership. They will explain what is covered on the BUYERS GUIDE detail/notes just below the box. If this box is checked, look very carefully at what they are offering. If the component/assembly/part(s) that go wrong after purchase are not on the list, or you drive it past the days/miles they warrant it for, it becomes AS-IS and they owe you nothing.

BY LAW, before purchase, you have the right (at your own expense) to have the vehicle checked out by a garage, and also a body shop. It is YOUR responsibility. Verbal representations you ignore.

Also know that as of May of 2022, used car purchased are no longer covered by California Lemon Law.

Well, some horrible case law just passed. Now Used Cars are no longer applicable for California Lemon Law protection. Now only vehicles sold/noted as "NEW" are applicable. So, take my advice, buy "NEW" whenever possible. Retain your rights under our California Lemon Law. There is NOTHING we can do for you if you buy used now.

When purchasing a new vehicle, keep in mind that the type of transmission that has been the most problematic, prone to failures (especially out of factory warranty) are the "CVT" type. This stands for "Continuously Variable Transmission". It essentially has a variable pitch belt inside. Great idea, poor ex*****on. An amazing number of brands of cars and SUV's use them now. I always recommend a conventional hydraulic transmission for durability and long life. It's important to read the manufacturers online brochures on the model you are interested in. If the type of transmission is not listed there, then call the Service Dept of the dealership and ASK. The Service Writers know.
