Knowing your rights can make all the difference.
❌ Don’t open the door.
✅ Ask for identification.
✅ Verify there is a valid warrant.
✅ Stay silent & request a lawyer.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and its recent reauthorizations created a self-petition process for non-citizens who have experienced abuse by their U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident relative. This allows victims to independently seek immigration classification without the abuser's knowledge or participation, providing them with greater safety and independence from their abusers.
