🚩 State Referee ticket ≠ DMV red flag.
These are two completely separate systems, and confusing them is what gets people stuck at the DMV.
The ticket goes to the court. The red flag only happens if the officer separately reported your vehicle to the DMV.
Here’s the part most people miss: the court outcome doesn’t clear the flag. Dismissed, never filed, or found guilty, if your vehicle is flagged, you still have to visit a State Referee and get a certificate before the DMV will renew your registration.
And if it was never flagged? Once the court case is done, you’re done. Nothing owed to the DMV or the Referee.
Not sure which one you are? Check your registration renewal notice for a smog or inspection requirement, or try renewing online, if it blocks you, you’re flagged. You can also pull your vehicle’s inspection history by going to the bar.ca.gov
