Pause before you press send.

A co-parenting message doesn’t have to solve every disagreement. Sometimes it just needs to get the blue jacket home.

Before sending, try one small edit: remove the accusation and keep the request.

Instead of:
“You never remember to send anything back.”

Try:
“Could you please send the blue jacket in the backpack tomorrow? Thank you.”

The second message gives a clear next step and keeps the focus on what your child needs.

You can’t control the response. You can choose words that are brief, specific and respectful.

Take a breath. Reread. Give yourself grace as you practice.

Always follow your court orders, required communication methods and safety plan. Don’t delay urgent responses or required notices.

Save this for the next time finding the right words feels hard.

Who decides what happens in mediation?

In Texas, a mediator helps the parties communicate and explore possible agreements. The mediator does not impose a decision on the parties.

Before mediation, ask your attorney:
• What issues are we trying to resolve?
• What should I understand before signing an agreement?
• What happens if we don’t reach an agreement?

A signed mediated settlement agreement can be binding. Make sure you understand its terms and legal effect before signing.

If there is family violence, coercion or a safety concern, discuss it privately with your attorney before mediation so appropriate objections or safeguards can be considered.

Understanding the process can make the next step feel a little less unfamiliar.

You don’t need the perfect words to ask for help.

• What’s happening? Write a short timeline with the dates you know.
• What matters most? List your biggest concerns and the questions you want to ask.
• What should you bring? Ask the office which documents to have ready, including any paperwork you’ve received from a court.

During the conversation, ask about next steps, fees and how communication would work. It’s okay to ask for an explanation in plain language.

A little preparation can help you focus on the conversation instead of trying to remember everything at once.

Save this for a day when you need a starting point. Which helps you feel more prepared: a written checklist or talking your questions through?

DIVORCE QUESTION: Should a parent who doesn’t pay child support still get to see their children?

It’s one of the most emotionally charged questions in family law.

Some believe that if a parent isn’t financially supporting their children, they shouldn’t enjoy the same parenting privileges.

Others believe a child’s relationship with a parent should never depend on money.

Here’s the important distinction: In Texas, child support and visitation are separate legal obligations. Falling behind on support doesn’t automatically eliminate visitation rights.

Try this quick check:
• What practical question needs an answer?
• Can I keep this message to one topic?
• Is the next step clear?
• Can I remove blame, sarcasm, or old arguments?

For example: “I can pick up at 5:30. Does that work for you?”

Clear, respectful communication is something you can practice one message at a time.
