On April 20, 2012, Twenty-Six (26) North Carolina State retirees brought a civil action in Gaston County, North Carolina to restore their contractually and constitutionally guaranteed retirement health benefits. I. Beverly Lake, et al v. State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees, et al. (Gaston: 12-CVS-1547). The North Carolina Supreme Court will be hearing the oral arguments in that case on Monday, October 4, 2021 at approximately 3:00 pm. Sam McGee of Tin Fulton Walker & Owen, PLLC and Michael Carpenter of Gray, Layton, Kersh, Solomon, Furr & Smith, P.A. will be presenting oral arguments on behalf of the Plaintiffs. Solicitor General Ryan Park of the North Carolina’s Attorney General’s office will present arguments on behalf of the Defendants.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the oral arguments will be done remotely and the courtroom will be closed; however, you can view the oral arguments streamed live via YouTube on the internet at the following link:

GLK is happy to congratulate Rhett Butler, who was sworn in as a member the North Carolina Bar this week. Rhett is GLK’s newest attorney. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Wake Forest School of Law, and received a Masters in Taxation from the University of Florida. Rhett comes to GLK from his previous career at Deloitte & Touché in New York city with a specialization in corporate tax, mergers and acquisitions, wills, trusts, and estates. GLK is pleased to be open and serve you in person. Many of our staff and attorneys are continuing to primarily work remotely due to COVID-19, but can be available by appointment or remote call.

We have taken steps to decrease the risk of COVID-19 exposure in our facility. We are cleaning our conference rooms after each use, and GLK personnel are wearing masks when social distancing is not possible. We are also regularly using hand sanitizer and monitoring potential risk exposure.

If you do not feel well, have symptoms associated with COVID-19, or have been exposed to COVID-19 please reschedule your meeting or arrange a remote meeting. We are happy to continue to serve you remotely and offer telephone and video meetings.

We have masks available if you would like to use one during your visit.
