Everyone say hi to Lexie! 👋🎉

Our newest team member is already hard at work shadowing our attorneys, learning the ins and outs of working at a family law firm, and getting a firsthand look at how we serve the families of Johnston, Harnett, and Wake counties who trust Breeden Law. She's bringing a great attitude, a big smile, and she's already fitting right in.

Of course, no onboarding at Breeden Law is complete without the most important tradition of all... the Welcome Cake. 🍰 We can't promise cake is in the employee handbook, but somehow it always seems to be part of the training process!

We're so excited to have Lexie on the team and can't wait to see the impact she'll make for our clients.

Drop a 👋 or a 🍰 in the comments to help us give Lexie a warm Breeden Law welcome!

Did you miss last week’s Family Law Friday episode?

A common question we hear in child custody cases is:

Can being civil to your ex actually hurt your custody case?

The answer may surprise you.

In North Carolina custody matters, communication between parents can play an important role. While you should never engage in arguments, insults, or unnecessary conflict, completely ignoring your co-parent may not always help your situation.

In last week’s episode, Attorney Jonathan Breeden explains:
✅ Why responding to reasonable questions about your children matters
✅ How to communicate professionally even when your ex is difficult
✅ Why being civil does not mean agreeing with everything your ex says
✅ How to set boundaries while still showing a willingness to co-parent
✅ When court-ordered communication tools may help reduce conflict

Did you know that not all retirement accounts are divided the same way in a divorce?

Many people assume pensions, 401(k)s, and IRAs are all treated the same, but that's not how it works.

In this episode of the Best of Johnston County Podcast, Jonathan Breeden explains:
✅ Why pensions are different from 401(k)s and IRAs
✅ How courts determine each spouse's share
✅ Why the length of your marriage can have a significant impact on retirement benefits

Understanding these differences can help you make more informed financial decisions during a divorce.

A judge’s signature doesn’t necessarily mean your QDRO is complete.

After the court signs a Qualified Domestic Relations Order, the retirement plan administrator must still review and approve it. Even a small error can result in rejection and add months to the divorce process.

In this clip, Jonathan Breeden explains why understanding the QDRO process is so important when dividing a 401(k). The right information now can save time, stress, and unnecessary expense later.
