This year, I would ask all of you to read our U.S. Constitution from beginning to end. Most people I've spoken to have never done this. It's a short document and definitely worth the thirty minute investment.

If you are a religious person who wants to be scheduled off on your day of worship at work -- i.e. Sunday for most folks -- then you should seriously considering asking for an accommodation.

The Supreme Court of the United States held yesterday that employers must show that accommodating your request must result in "substantial increased costs" in order to deny you your right to worship under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

In observance of Memorial Day, our office will be closed Friday (May 26) through Monday (May 29).

This weekend, I would ask that you all reflect on one fact that we often overlook in times of political conflict and economic uncertainty: none of what we worry about today could be possible if it weren't for the tree of liberty being periodically refreshed with the blood of patriots who voluntarily take up arms in defense of these United States.

Remember: Tip pools in restaurants *can* be legal provided they comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act which is the federal minimum wage & overtime law. The Arkansas Minimum Wage Act may also be applicable.

Tip pools cannot, among other things, include owners, supervisors, or managers. If you work at a restaurant and believe your tip pool may be illegal, please feel free to reach out to our office to learn about your rights.

The sushi restaurant in Fort Myers made its 75 servers share their tips with its chefs, owners, and managers, according to the Department of Labor.

Also, keep in mind that it's always better to file a tax return EVEN IF you owe money and cannot pay it right now. There is no crime against owing the government money but failing to file your return is a crime. If you owe money that you cannot pay, feel free to reach out to our office. We may be able to help.

One of the most nerve-wracking experiences an American can have is discovering they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service and cannot pay what is owed.

Friendly reminder that tomorrow is the due date for your 2023 federal and Arkansas state income tax returns.

Remember: if you live in Texarkana, you are generally entitled to a full refund of any Arkansas state income tax you have paid in as a W-2 employee but you still need to file a return in order to get that money back.

Tomorrow is the tax deadline. If you need more time to file your return, apply for an extension by the April 18 deadline. Remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay any tax owed.
