ering representation. To this end, I listened to clients and friends’ experiences with attorneys, which shed light on how to improve upon this relationship and thereby strengthen the representation. Here’s what I learned:
Clients want an attorney who will return their calls and emails promptly. Clients want an attorney who will keep them apprised of the status of their case
Clients want an attorney who will consult with them before making major decisions regarding their case. Of paramount importance is the attorney client relationship, which is a partnership that works best when the attorney works closely with the client and values his input. In fact, attorney responsiveness is such an issue for clients in New York that the New York Appellate Courts have codified the following in its “Statement of Client’s Rights”:
“You (the client) are entitled to have your questions and concerns addressed promptly (by your attorney) and to receive a prompt reply to your letters, telephone calls, emails, faxes, and other communications.” (Statement of Client’s Rights §1210.1(5) Posting) (parentheticals added). My overarching goal is to be cognizant of the dynamic attorney client relationship and to always provide my clients with the best possible representation.
