Throughout March we highlighted women judges and justices. We also highlighted that on August 4, Kansas is facing a major vote regarding an amendment to our consitution and how Supreme Court justices in our state our selected. Currently, our justices are selected by a Nominating Commission made up of an attorney and layperson from each of the state's congressional districts and one attorney chairperson. They will selected three candidates for the governor to name to the bench. That justice will then stand for a retention vote at the next general election. If they are retained they will then stand for retention election in six years. If you are interested in seeing how the process works you can!
