Have you been considering revisiting your child support Order?

Did you know that in 2024, sweeping changes to Georgia’s Child Support calculator were implemented, resulting in the biggest changes in child support awards since 2006?

Child support in Georgia is based on income shares: how much does each parent make? But in 2006, there was disagreement on whether and how parenting time was considered, so it was left out of the worksheet entirely unless parties asked for a parenting time deviation.

In 2024, the Georgia Child Support Commission revised the economic standards which determine child support for various income levels: How much do economists say people spend on children based on how much they earn?

The commission is rolling out a new child support calculator in June, which has adjustments for low income earners as well as specifically considering veterans benefits.

The biggest change, though, will be that in January 2026, parenting time will impact child support more than it ever has. The new parenting time calculator is no longer a discretionary deviation. It takes into consideration the cost impact that a non-custodial parent incurs during his or her parenting time.

Many attorneys and judges are beginning to implement these calculations now, so that cases currently before the court don’t bounce right back into court after the first of the year.

How will this impact you and your children? That’s hard to tell without more information It will depend on several factors, such as the parents’ earning bracket, how much change in income each parent has had since the last order, the overall disparity in parties’ incomes, costs of child care and insurance, whether any children have aged out, and your parenting arrangement.

What we can do is meet with you to discuss these sweeping changes and give you an idea of where these sweeping changes may lead. Give us a call to schedule a consultation!
