You may have heard the term “5-year lookback” when talking about Medicaid, but what does it actually mean?

When someone applies for Medicaid to help cover nursing home care, certain financial transactions made during the 60 months before the application may be reviewed.

This can include things like:

• Gifts or transfers of money
• Transfers of real estate or other assets
• Changes in ownership
• Assets transferred for less than fair market value

And this is where planning can matter.

Medicaid rules can be complicated, and financial decisions made before an application will have an impact so it’s important to understand how that decision could affect future Medicaid eligibility.

Planning ahead gives you time to understand the rules, identify potential issues and make informed decisions about your future care and your assets.
