Those who have practiced before Judge Gardner know the respect he showed to everyone in his courtroom. He made a lasting impact on our community and the countless families who came through Division G. His commitment to fairness, dignity, and the rule of law has not gone unnoticed.
On behalf of our office, we thank Judge Gardner for his years of dedicated service and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.
For 39 years, I have been in court nearly every day, hoping that my work made this community safer and that we lifted up our most vulnerable children and families. Thirteen of those years were spent in Division G, a small corner of the Justice Center that became a world of its own. Darlene, Sue, Macey, Chelsea, Lisa, Stacey, Cheryl and I worked shoulder to shoulder, steady in purpose, humbled by the lives entrusted to us.
I am deeply proud of what we built together.
Every day inside the Justice Center, I see the quiet, unseen labor that keeps our system moving: maintenance staff arriving before dawn, attorneys preparing in the hallways, deputies readying to take the stand, and the citizens who walk through our doors often on some of the hardest days of their lives. The decisions I make, the sentences I must pass, the lives that intersect with mine, these moments weigh heavily on my heart. To show up fully present, to remain genuine and authentic, to offer dignity and fairness even when the work is lonely or painful, that has been my calling. It has also been one of the deepest emotional burdens I have ever carried. The last three months, especially, have forced me to reflect on the toll this work has taken.
It is difficult to hear the terrible things people do to one another without being changed by it. You may have noticed that joy and laughter have been harder for me to find.
I will retire from the bench at the end of 2026. In the upcoming year I have an opportunity to help improve the lives of families and children statewide, while also taking time to visit my own children, return to playing music, take Reina on a trip beyond Pensacola, and enjoy whatever healthy years I am fortunate enough to have. We are foster parents, which has become more important to us than we would have thought.
So many people have supported me and lifted me up, and I hope you will be happy for me and Reina. These last three months have been both exhilarating and exhausting, and they have clarified what matters most. I am forever grateful for the support I have received over three terms as Judge of Division G. You have trusted me with your safety, your families, your futures.
For those who contributed to our campaign, the committee will issue refunds in full. Should you wish to decline all or part, any contributions left will be used solely to retire existing campaign debt.
Tomorrow morning, as always, I will take the bench promptly, doing the work this district elected me to do.
