It has been an incredibly tough week at the office with my friend, mentor, and law partner, Ed Silva, passing away. Thank you to a very special client who dropped off flowers, chocolate, and a card for me and Denise today. And thank you to the many others who have dropped off unexpected gifts, called or sent texts. Hearing from so many friends has been an unexpected blessing among the sadness.

A former summer law clerk of ours reminded me of a funny story about Ed. He said we were trying to schedule mediation with Judge Martin. I called his office and they told me he was unavailable. Ed picked up his cell phone and called Judge Martin’s cell and was able to talk to Judge Martin (Jim, to him) and get the mediation scheduled immediately.

The old adage is true: A good lawyer knows the law; a great lawyer knows the judge. Ed Silva was a great lawyer.

I'm excited to participate as a speaker for the TBA for this upcoming CLE, The Power of Politeness, on December 3, 2026.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division in collaboration with the TBA Attorney Well Being Committee will hold a CLE on the Power of Politeness: Why Civility Matters in the Legal Profession on Dec. 3 at noon CST. Join a panel of respected legal professionals for a thoughtful discussion on how courtesy, respect and intentional communication can strengthen relationships with clients, opposing counsel, colleagues, court staff and the bench. Rather than focusing on the behaviors attorneys should avoid, this conversation will highlight the positive impact that small acts of professionalism can have on advocacy, negotiations, courtroom interactions and office culture. Drawing on their diverse perspectives and real-world experiences, the panelists will share practical insights into how politeness can enhance credibility, reduce conflict, improve client service and contribute to a more professional and effective legal community. Whether a new lawyer or a seasoned practitioner, attendees will leave with practical strategies for incorporating thoughtful communication and everyday professionalism into their practice. Team Ed!

We are on Team Ed! As some of you may know, our fearless leader, the Godfather, Ed Silva, has been facing some health issues recently. Rest assured he is home and doing well, but we miss having him in the office every day. Thanks to Tim Pagliara for these shirts! Ed is appreciative of his many friends who have been checking in on him the past few weeks and we look forward to having him back in the office.

I’m starting a new chapter tonight. I’ll be joining my former law clerk coworker/law school classmate, Emily Harvey, to teach the legal writing portion of the 4th year bar review class at the Nashville School of Law. I am so grateful for this opportunity to go back and teach at my law school. With B headed off to college in a few weeks, the timing of this could not have been better. I hope to teach my students how to strengthen their writing skills, and maybe insert some pop culture and comic relief from time to time.

Family law is difficult in part because you are helping clients navigate through what is inevitably one of the most difficult times in their lives. From time to time you have special clients that you connect with, and who are truly appreciative of your efforts. Yesterday, one such dear client dropped off these flowers for me and my staff to celebrate her one year divorce-aversary!
