It was a very special day for three of our associates. The Honorable Judge Mark T. Pittman graciously set aside time before his docket to administer the oath as they were admitted to practice law before the U.S. District Court - Northern District.

During the ceremony for Devon Davis, Ethan Lennon and Isaac Olson, Judge Pittman asked each about their law school background. He also remarked about Cantey Hanger’s strong reputation, noting that his predecessor, the Hon. John McBryde, began his career with the firm. Special thanks to Partner Cailin Ringelman, who served as their sponsor, and Megan Goor, who took the photos to commemorate the day.

The annual Main Table event supports the excellent work of Downtown Fort Worth. We believe strong downtowns are good for communities, have been in downtown Fort Worth since 1882, and support DFWI because of the way it represents businesses.

Our firm's Dallas and Waxahachie offices are also in their respective downtowns. Our dinner from Grace was excellent and Kim and Antonio Allen, Sandy and Brian Newby, Nell and Ryan Valdez, Sara Norman and Katy Kirbo enjoyed the evening.

Planning for your special-needs loved one’s future doesn't have to be a guessing game.

The Ellis County Bar Association is hosting a free Guardianship Forum in Waxahachie on September 25th to help special-needs families navigate legal guardianship, alternatives, government benefits and local resources.

Cassandra Payton, Partner in our Waxahachie office, will be leading a session on "Alternatives to Guardianship."

Other scheduled topics include: Guardianship Overview by Stephen Crane with the Crane Law Firm, Medicaid Benefits by Lindsey Hughes with The Hale Law Firm, P.C. and Community Resources by Michael Boler with Bridges Training Foundation.

Rhains Enevoldsen didn’t grow up dreaming of law school; his path was shaped by two very different influences at home. His mother worked as a federal law enforcement officer, while his father ran a small construction company, a mix that gave him an appreciation for duty and business.

It eventually pointed him toward law. As an undergrad at Arizona State, he realized he enjoyed advocacy and working on complex projects. “Graduating with a JD would allow me to work at the intersection of strategy, law and business.

“I thought the ability to strategically help and advise business clients would be helpful, not merely to prevent or reduce economic damages in litigation, but to prevent possible issues before they arise,” he said. “I know what it looks like for someone to start and build a business and I don’t want to see them lose it for something that could easily have been avoided.”

Rhains is in his second year of law school at Texas A&M. He is in the fall extern program, which places him with a law firm and he receives course credit, but no compensation. His previous law building blocks were with Beck Group and the U.S. District Court in Midland.

He is enjoying life in Texas A&M’s new law building. “Very excited to be in a building with windows, especially as the inaugural class. It is definitely a better match to the Texas A&M brand.”

Outside the office, he stays active with hockey, golf and pickleball, and he’s an avid traveler with visits to 20 countries.

And the origin of the name? “It’s derived from the old Welsh “Rhain,” meaning “lance” or “spear.”

Landen Hare is a vintage and antique collector in Williamstown, Ky., focused on religious history. Recently, he purchased an 1881 Bible.

And what does this have to do with Cantey Hanger?

Tucked inside the Bible was a photo. "I believed the photo was from 1882 and was in the back of the Bible a year or so after 'William and Samuel' acquired it," Landen wrote. "Maybe as safe-keeping or a good luck superstition sort of thing."

Landen was curious who William and Samuel were and why they were in a room full of law books. With the use of AI and Google Lens to take photos -- and after multiple failed attempts of it just saying it was a Victorian-style photo -- he tried a close-up of their faces. After many attempts, it was able to identify them as William Capps and Samuel Benton Cantey.

He did more digging and sent an inquiry to the Cantey Hanger page last Saturday. "I got back confirmation almost immediately," Landen said. Landen had found a photo very similar to two others the firm has in its historical files.

In his research, Landen found that William Capps was deeply rooted in the local civic life of Fort Worth with his wife, Sallie. They eventually purchased the famous Queen Anne Victorian Pollock-Capps House. As for Samuel Benton Cantey, he was born in Alabama to a Confederate general and graduated from Auburn in 1880. He then moved to Texas to be admitted to the bar by a special act from the Texas Legislature in 1881, where he partnered with Capps. That partnership eventually became Cantey and Hanger.

Thank you, Landen. The firm is approaching its 145th year and this is icing on the cake.

Do you have a dispute that isn’t well suited to the courthouse? Does it need to move faster than local courts allow? Does it require confidentiality? Does it involve trade secrets? Do the parties agree about that?

There is another option!

Arbitration is when the parties hire a private person to resolve a dispute. Arbitration has proven to be an effective way to resolve disputes privately, promptly and economically. AAA Arbitrators have experience resolving commercial disputes and can work on the parties' schedules. The parties can agree to keep costs down, including attorneys’ fees, cost of experts, depositions, etc. Arbitrators also keep private matters private.

Bill has worked to resolve many types of disputes, and his experience as a litigator on both sides of the docket and as a Justice on Dallas’ Fifth Court of Appeals qualifies him quite well to serve as an arbitrator for your next dispute.

The American Arbitration Association (AAA) is a not-for-profit, public service organization that offers a broad range of dispute resolution services to business executives, individuals, trade associations, unions, consumers, families and all levels of government.
