The recent Gabby Petito missing persons case offers the chance to raise awareness of the thousands of missing Native American girls and women in the United States. Recently appointed U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has established a Missing and Murdered unit within the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

"On Friday, 180 tribal nations and 35 Native organizations, 25 states and the District of Columbia, and Casey Family Programs and 10 child welfare and adoption organizations filed briefs to protect the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) before the United States Supreme Court."

U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announces plans to launch the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative which will work towards compiling and making public data about the boarding schools utilized for assimilation by the Department of the Interior. This is a positive step forward for helping the families of those whose children may have been taken to these boarding schools.
