🚨 DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER 🚨

The Stanley County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement agencies across South Dakota and the nation for the 2026 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign.

📅 August 19 – September 7, 2026

As we approach Labor Day weekend, we’re reminding everyone that impaired driving is preventable — and the consequences can be deadly.

During this nationwide enforcement period, the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing our focus on impaired driving through high-visibility patrols, enforcement, and public awareness efforts.

🍺 If you’ve been drinking, DO NOT DRIVE.
💊 If you’re impaired by drugs, DO NOT DRIVE.
📱 Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, use a ride service, or make arrangements to get home safely.

One bad decision can change multiple lives. Our goal isn’t to make more arrests — it’s to prevent crashes, save lives, and make Stanley County’s roads safer.

🚧 Public Safety Notice 🚧
Date August 7 2026

Out of an abundance of caution, the City-owned parking area along Highway 83 between the Train Depot and the public reatrooms has been temporarily closed.

This decision was made following coordination with affected partners and a special City Council meeting, with public safety as the top priority.

We understand this closure is an inconvenience and appreciate the public’s patience. Taking this step now helps reduce risk and ensures emergency responders and public works crews can safely operate if conditions change.

The City of Fort Pierre, South Dakota and Stanley County Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation with local partners. Updates will be provided as they become available, and the area will reopen once it is determined to be safe.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING – STANLEY COUNTY 🚩

The National Weather Service in Aberdeen has issued a Red Flag Warning for Stanley County. Under Stanley County Ordinance 2016-01, a countywide burn ban is automatically in effect for the duration of the warning.

📅 Effective: Monday, August 3, 2026
🕛 Noon CDT (11:00 AM MDT) through 9:00 PM CDT (8:00 PM MDT)

Expected Conditions

🌬️ North winds: 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph

💧 Relative Humidity: 25% to 35%

What This Means

Critical fire weather conditions are expected. Any fire that starts can spread rapidly and become difficult to control. A Red Flag Warning does not mean a wildfire is currently burning—it means weather conditions are favorable for extreme fire behavior and rapid wildfire growth.

Burn Ban Reminder

🚫 No open burning is permitted while the Red Flag Warning is in effect. This includes burning brush, debris, and other open fires prohibited under Stanley County Ordinance 2016-01.

Help Prevent Wildfires

• Do not burn debris or brush.
• Avoid parking or driving vehicles in tall, dry grass.
• Avoid activities that create sparks, including welding or grinding in dry vegetation.
• Secure trailer safety chains to prevent sparks.
• Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials.
• Never leave a campfire unattended, and only use fires where permitted after the warning has expired.
• Report any signs of smoke or wildfire immediately by calling 911.

Stay informed by monitoring trusted sources, including the National Weather Service, Stanley County Emergency Management, and local public safety agencies. Have multiple ways to receive emergency information and be prepared to act if a wildfire develops.

🔴 FIRE RESTRICTIONS, WATER CONSERVATION - still in effect

🔥🌡️ FIRE RESTRICTIONS, WATER CONSERVATION & HEAT ADVISORY 🌡️🔥

Stanley County is experiencing hot, dry conditions that have increased wildfire risk while also placing additional demand on our water system.

🔥 Stage One Fire Restrictions take effect July 18 for the Fort Pierre National Grassland and remain in effect until December 31, or until rescinded. These restrictions apply only to U.S. Forest Service lands and do not replace Stanley County’s local burn ordinance.

💧 WATER CONSERVATION REQUEST

The City of Fort Pierre, Mni Wiconi, and West River/Lyman-Jones Rural Water are requesting immediate water conservation due to extreme heat and reduced water treatment capacity.

🚫 Emergency water use restrictions are in effect. Until further notice, please do not:

* Water lawns or trees
* Wash vehicles or pavement
* Fill pools or spray tanks
* Use water for other non-essential purposes

These restrictions are necessary to help ensure adequate water is available for homes, hospitals, clinics, businesses, emergency services, and livestock. The City of Fort Pierre continues to monitor its water storage levels.

🟡 RATTLESNAKE ALERT STILL IN EFFECT

☀️🌡️ HEAT ADVISORY & RATTLESNAKE ALERT 🐍

With the extreme heat across Stanley County, rattlesnakes are becoming more active and are being seen more frequently near roads, trails, rocky areas, river bottoms, and tall grass.

If you’re working, ranching, fishing, hiking, or enjoying the outdoors:

💧 Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade.
🥾 Watch where you step and stay on established paths when possible.
🐍 If you see a rattlesnake, stay calm, give it plenty of space, and slowly back away. Never attempt to handle or disturb it.

⚠️ A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 10:00 PM CDT Thursday. Heat index values could reach 100°F, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

Take care of yourself, check on neighbors, keep pets cool with fresh water and shade, and stay alert while enjoying the outdoors.

⛈️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH #439 ⛈️

The National Weather Service has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch #439, which includes Stanley County, and is in effect until 9:00 PM CDT.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing:

🌬️ Damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or greater
🧊 Large hail of 1 inch in diameter or larger
🌧️ Heavy rainfall with localized flooding
🌩️ Frequent lightning

Now is the time to prepare.
✔️ Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.
✔️ Keep your phone charged and enable Wireless Emergency Alerts.
✔️ Monitor trusted weather sources, including NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service.
✔️ Have a plan to move indoors quickly if a warning is issued.

A Watch means be prepared. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for your area, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.

Stanley County Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.

Former Fort Pierre Chief of Police, and retired Pierre Police Officer Mike Maskovich passed away yesterday aftrernoon surrounded by family. Services are pending. He was indeed a dear friend to all that knew him and will be remembered and missed. I have been told Iseburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE – 302ND AVE 🚧

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLIC NOTICE

Due to damage caused by the severe storm on the morning of June 29, 302nd Avenue has been closed due to significant damage to the roadway and culvert.

📍 Closure Location:
302nd Avenue is closed from Stroup’s for approximately one mile.

⚠️ Access Information:

* You may access properties from the north or the south.
* You will NOT be able to travel completely through the closure area.

🚫 Please Do Not Drive Around Barricades
The road has been closed for the safety of the public. Driving around barricades places you and others at risk and may further damage the roadway.

Stanley County Emergency Management and the Stanley County Highway Department are actively monitoring the situation, evaluating repairs, and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
