Yesterday, I did a very small thing, but it’s something that I’m extremely proud of. THE RED LANGUAGE = MY PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE NAACP NATIONAL CONSTITUTION… it passed! So my tiny little line of red is now officially adopted as part of the national NAACP platform! They should have typed my proposed language to read “state OR local level,” but I’ll take it as passed by an overwhelming majority vote of the delegates present! It’s an HONOR to assist and serve the People alongside the oldest & largest civil rights organization in U.S. history!

A thing from the Supreme Court of Virginia happened yesterday! It’s a small little thing, but I will PROUDLY hang this in a frame on my office wall. I know the stories of the people that led to this small little thing — I was blessed with the opportunity to walk with each of them through their darkest journeys. So while this Certificate might be a small little “Honor Roll” nod of recognition from the Virginia Supreme Court, the reality is that the impact on the lives of those that I was a servant to is not even measurable and, as such, this small little nod of a Certificate is as meaningful to me as having received the largest golden trophy ever made in this fine Commonwealth. This small little thing represents actual lives that were changed for the better and it represents a few people who weren’t left to walk their darkest journeys alone…

this time last year, these two were in prison—unjustly. one for 33 years, the other for 1,843 years. they were jailed as teenagers and subjected to unjust sentences because of the color of their skin. but, together with my partner in mischief, the brilliant Gaylene Kanoyton, the Hampton NAACP and the Virginia NAACP, we got them out earlier this year. today, Lawrence & Darnell came over to spend Thanksgiving with me… we broke bread, we reflected on this past year, and we gave thanks… for freedom & for the ability to live life… this is what I went to law school for… to touch people… to walk with others through their toughest times… to be a light driving out darkness… and I promise to always keep my fight a righteous one ❤️

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! In 2020, Virginia passed a new law making Election Day a state-wide holiday. Though, while schools will be closed & many folks will be off from work, under current law Virginia employers are *not* required to give employees time off to vote, so plan ahead! Early in person voting is happening NOW! You can head on over to your local Voter Registrar’s office to cast your ballot. Super easy! Also, not registered yet? That’s okay! For the first time (in my lifetime, at least), Virginia now offers SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION! That’s right! YOU CAN STILL VOTE! You can now register to vote and actually cast your provisional ballot on the SAME DAY—up to and including Election Day 11/08/22. Have questions? Contact your local Voter Registrar… Or ask me! (I am the Vice Chair of the Election Board)

VIRGINIA! did you know that you have a Citizen Portal? it’s wonderful! to see all things uniquely yours, go to the link below:
https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation
in your Citizen Portal, you can find out where you are supposed to go vote, find out who your Voter Registrar is, find out who sits on your local Election Board, see your voting history by year and by election, submit your online application to receive a Vote by Mail ballot, check your voter registration status, and register to vote if you are not already signed up! it is a wonderful resource provided by the Virginia Department of Elections. I recommend bookmarking this website in your browser and even adding it as a button on your smartphone… you will end up visiting the Citizen Portal more often than you might think and having it on your phone will come in handy when someone mentions that they want to register to vote… simply click the button installed on your phone and hand it over to your friend to get them signed up to vote!

A win! ❤️ Just one battle in the larger ongoing war for civil rights & human rights, but each win should be celebrated nonetheless. They serve as reminders to not give up or give in to hopelessness. There are genuine allies who actually care… we are out here! And, we will fight like hell with you! Battles are worth fighting & are still being won, so don’t give up! We are all in this together…
