One of the highlights of moving to the Blue Ridge mountains has been my appointment to the board of the International Friendship Center based in highlands, North Carolina. This nonprofit does such amazing work including running the Highlands Food Pantry.

Kylie and I went to volunteer last week at our "Empty Bowls" fundraising event where we were able to raise more than $118,000 for the Food Pantry, more than double what we raised last year. We were so honored to be a part of this fantastic event for a great cause, combating food insecurity in Western North Carolina and as always supporting our local immigrant community.

Last week I reached a pinnacle of my career speaking at the annual national conference of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). This is something that was on my career bucket list for over a decade. Once a year thousands of Immigration lawyers come together for our national conference to learn from the brightest and best Immigration lawyers in the country and this year I was one of them! I was asked to speak in 2020 on LGBTQ immigration but the conference was cancelled. I finally made my return speaking about the topic of adjustment of status (something I have done for many of you all out there). I was so honored to be invited to speak and receive recognition from AILA national leadership for my work as an immigration lawyer and skills as a speaker. I have attended AILA national many times as an attendee but this year was so special being there as a speaker. So many lawyers came up to me throughout the conference after my panel telling me how much they learned and how much they enjoyed it.

Additionally, I got to spend time with some of my fantastic colleagues and friends, including my law partner who was presenting on EB5 and my dear friend from law school . It was so comforting to be around other immigration lawyers for 4 days straight, commiserating about the new administration and being with people who truly understand everything Ive been experiencing over the past few months. My soul truly needed it! We rallied together and vowed to keep pushing forward, representing our clients the best we can and challenging the rampant injustice and cruelty we see every day. I came back feeling reinvigorated! We move onward, helping those we can because unfortunately nowadays there are simply so many that cannot be helped. We pray for the strength to make through the next 4 years.

It's been a rough time to be an immigration lawyer, but the connection to all of you, around the 50 states and across the world, gives me the strength to keep trekking forward. Might as well look pretty while I'm out here trying to save the world one case at a time. 😅
