These e-bikes have gotten completely out of hand. Parents are purchasing these for their teenage children because "they really want one and all their friends have one and they are really good at driving them." I'll be the one to say it in no uncertain terms.... this is just bad parenting. These e-bikes can go nearly 30 mph, and kids are driving them on the public roads. They may know "how" to operate them, but at that age they do not know how to properly look out for dangers from other vehicles. Everyone in Florida knows how crazy the roadways can be for regular passenger cars. Allowing your teen to drive these on those same roadways is absolutely insane and, in my opinion, borderline toxic parenting.
The legislature needs to step in and change the laws regarding these as the current law is inadequate to address this new technology. In my opinion, no person without a driver's license should be able to operate any motorized vehicle on the public roadways that is capable of going more then let's say 10 mph.
Rant over.
A growing danger is emerging on Treasure Coast roadways as a surge in e-bike crashes sends an increasing number of riders - many of them children.
