A former mental health therapy intern at New Hope CORPS in Homestead has been arrested after authorities alleged she engaged in a sexual relationship with a patient under her care at an addiction treatment facility.

According to investigators, the alleged misconduct occurred while the patient was receiving treatment. Mental health professionals occupy positions of trust and are prohibited from engaging in sexual relationships with current patients.

Horowitz Law has filed a lawsuit in Palm Beach County against Dr. Andrew Sorial and Boca Raton Psychiatry on behalf of eight former patients who allege they were subjected to sexual misconduct during virtual psychiatric treatment sessions.

The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Sorial exploited the psychiatrist-patient relationship by pressuring female patients to expose their bodies, wear revealing clothing during telehealth appointments, and send intimate photographs under the guise of treatment. It further alleges that Boca Raton Psychiatry failed to take appropriate action despite warning signs.

Horowitz Law has filed a new child sexual abuse lawsuit against St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Connecticut, on behalf of a former boarding student who alleges he was sexually abused by former chaplain and counselor Fr. Edward McGrath.

According to the lawsuit, the student reported the abuse to school leadership in 1993, but the school allegedly failed to investigate, report it to law enforcement, or notify his mother.

Survivors deserve accountability. Institutions entrusted with children must take abuse reports seriously.

According to the arrest report, investigators allege Johnson used his position as a camp counselor to meet and communicate with the child before alleged incidents of sexual abuse and battery occurred.

Youth-serving organizations have a responsibility to protect children from adults who may misuse positions of trust.
