This week's plain-English explainer. E-E-A-T is the framework Google and the AI engines use to decide whether to trust a page — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust.

Three of those four can be manufactured. Anyone can claim expertise. Authority can be purchased through directory placements. Trust signals can be installed by a developer in an afternoon. Experience cannot be faked, because experience is what you personally did.

That distinction matters more this month than it did last month. On August 25 Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal, with Cleary, Freshfields, Weil and Williams and Connolly as launch firms. Google is training the legal profession to ask Gemini its questions, which means your discoverability now runs through a machine reading your website for evidence you have actually done the work.

On a mediator's page that looks concrete. Not "extensive experience in family law," but 1,100 mediations since 1998, 340 of them high-conflict custody, in the Eleventh and Seventeenth Judicial Circuits. Not "we handle complex cases," but the case type, the jurisdiction, the year and the outcome in your own words. Not a bio — a record. A competitor can copy your service pages tonight. He cannot copy twenty-eight years on the bench.

Visibility Audit Friday. No submission in the queue this week, so here is the methodology instead — the crawler access check, and why it is the first thing we run on any firm's website.

Most people open robots.txt, see that GPTBot is allowed, and stop. That is not enough. A mid-August analysis of the top 1,000 websites found 17.6% allow GPTBot in robots.txt and then return a 403 error when GPTBot actually asks for a page. The published policy says yes and the firewall says no, and nothing in your analytics reports it.

Three steps. Check robots.txt against every AI agent by name. Request your key pages while identifying as each of those agents and read the status code. Then load the page with JavaScript turned off to confirm the content is actually in the HTML.

One deadline worth knowing: Cloudflare has said that starting September 15, new signups and free-tier accounts will default to blocking multi-purpose crawlers.

Drop your firm's URL in the comments and we will audit one next Friday.

Posting Isn't a Marketing Strategy

"We post every week."

That's great...

But is AI learning anything from those posts?

Random content rarely builds authority.

Strategic content answers questions, demonstrates expertise, reinforces your practice areas, and helps AI understand exactly what you do.

The firms that win over the next few years won't necessarily post more.

They'll post smarter.

That's the difference between creating content and building visibility.

This week's plain-English explainer. Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the work of getting your firm named inside the answer itself rather than winning a click from a list of blue links.

For twenty years the path was rank, then click, then convert. In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode there is frequently no list — just a paragraph that either names your firm or does not. And the demand is real: an analysis of 7.5 million conversations found commercial-intent questions inside ChatGPT nearly doubled in a year, from about 243 million a week to 533 million. Those are the "who should I hire" and "what will this cost" questions.

Practically, AEO means answering the question in the first two sentences of a page, giving the engine facts it can lift — jurisdictions, credentials, fees, timelines — and measuring whether the answer names you, not how many impressions you got.

Here is a number worth sitting with. Between roughly August 8 and August 14, Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% — an 86% drop in four days. As recently as April, Reddit was the single most-cited domain on the entire platform.

Nothing was announced. OpenAI changed how ChatGPT expands a query behind the scenes, and the biggest citation source on the internet was largely gone by the weekend.

For a law firm or a mediation practice, the lesson is not about Reddit. It is that AI visibility is not a one-time project, and it cannot rest on a single profile or listing. Build authority across several independent sources, keep your own site as the record everything points back to, and read your monthly numbers against what the whole market did — not just against last month.

This week's plain-English explainer. Schema markup is code on your website that tells search engines and AI systems exactly what you are — a law firm, these attorneys, these practice areas, this address, these credentials — in a format they read without guessing.

Most legal websites run generic "Organization" schema, which is the same markup a bakery uses. It confirms you exist and nothing more. Last week researchers documented Google AI Overviews describing an entire local pack of law firms by pulling from one attorney's self-promotional listicle instead of the firms' own sites. That's the cost of being unreadable. LegalService or Attorney schema, plus Person schema for each attorney with bar admissions and linked profiles, is the fix.

Here's a number worth sitting with. An analysis of about 35,000 ChatGPT citations found that 17.1% of the domains ChatGPT cites are user-generated content platforms — Reddit, Wikipedia and LinkedIn make up nearly all of it. That's more than four times the share held by actual publishers.

For a law firm or a mediation practice, this means the answer someone gets about your specialty is more likely built on a stranger's forum post than on the site you've spent a decade building. The fix isn't more blog posts. It's showing up, under your real name, where the questions actually get asked — and making sure your own site is the clean entity record everything points back to.

If AI Never Mentions You...

Here's a difficult question.

When someone asks AI to recommend a mediator in your city...

Does it mention you?

If the answer is "I don't know," then neither do your future clients.

The legal industry is entering a new era where visibility depends on more than search rankings.

AI is becoming the first introduction.

Google is simply the verification step.

If AI never introduces your practice, you never have the opportunity to earn the client's trust.

That's why AI visibility matters.

Quick translation of a phrase you'll hear more of: query intent. It just means what a person actually wants when they search, not the exact words they type.

Take "divorce mediation Miami." One person wants to hire someone today. Another wants to understand how mediation works. A third is comparing mediation to litigation before deciding. Same three words, three completely different jobs. Old SEO crammed all three onto one page and hoped.

ChatGPT and Google AI Mode don't work that way — ask a how-does-it-work question and the engine wants a clear explainer; ask who-should-I-hire and it wants a named, credentialed authority. Give it the wrong kind of page and you're simply not in the answer. The fix isn't more keywords. It's matching each page to the intet behind the question.

The visibility audit we run before we ever open a firm's website: the directory check.

When ChatGPT or Claude recommends an attorney, it often trusts Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Justia more than your own homepage — those directories are structured, verified, and indexed for years. So the first audit is of your listings, and in nine out of ten firms they don't agree with each other.

Three things we check first: is the firm name spelled identically everywhere (including "LLC")? Does the address and phone match to the character across Avvo, Google, and the site? Is the practice area described the same way? Every mismatch is a reason for the engine to doubt you — and one mediator

We looked at had three different office addresses live across directories, so AI named a competitor with a clean record instead. Fix the listings first. It's the cheapest AI-visibility win there is.
