When I started my firm, I knew I didn’t want it to depend on me forever.

I didn’t have the full roadmap at the time, but I did have a clear intention: I wanted the firm to (eventually) run without me.

Over time, that intention shaped all my actions and decisions. And eventually, it’s what allowed me to step out of the day-to-day completely.

The Freedom Firm Playbook is a private podcast series for law firm owners who are ready to step away from the day-to-day and build something that doesn’t require them to be at the center of it all.

This might be the most expensive belief in your entire firm:

‘I can’t afford to hire.’

Because every hour you stay in the work that someone else could handle is an hour you’re not growing the business.

→ Not attracting new leads.

→ Not building relationships.

→ Not creating the structure your firm actually needs.

At some point, staying where you are becomes the risk.

I hear this all the time - “I can’t afford to hire yet.”

But if you actually run the numbers and realize the money being left on the table long-term by not hiring, you would be surprised. You are fully capable of hiring, and hiring much earlier on than you may realize.

I created a growth calculator to show law firm owners what it actually costs to hire (and what your firm needs to be bringing in to support that hire).

These are the same calculations I used to grow my team and remove myself from the day-to-day… which is what allowed me to step away from the business.

When you focus on planting seeds, you don’t worry as much about whether you’ll hit your goals.

Because when the seeds are planted consistently, the harvest comes.

Follow for more on building a business that doesn’t rely on you for every result.

And if this shifted something for you, share it with someone who needs this reminder.

This is the lie keeping law firm owners stuck.

Your clients want the outcome... that’s it! They don’t care who is handling it as long as it’s done competently.

When I stepped back from intake in my own firm, my intake person wasn’t selling me. She was selling what the firm’s systems do and how the team handles it. Clients signed. Work got done.

Structure made this possible. Your team delivers the outcome consistently using SOPs and systems, without you in the middle of every step.

If your firm still depends on you for every client interaction, that’s not a client problem, that’s a systems and leadership problem.

I’m talking more about this in this week’s new podcast episode, ‘Being the Face of Your Firm Is Not the Same as Being Its Salesperson.’

Referrals are a strong source of business. But only if you have a system to capture them.

When your intake depends on you, your follow-up depends on you, and your close depends on you... The volume you can handle is capped by how available you are. When you’re busy, the pipeline stalls. When the pipeline stalls, you start over.

A real sales system has:

- Consistent lead generation that doesn’t require you to personally interact every week.

- A documented intake process your team can run.

- A structured follow-up sequence that runs without you remembering.

- A conversion process that closes leads (preferably, without you on every call)

Your referral network is a lead source. What you build around it is the system.

Most law firm owners have the relationships. They don’t have the system. That’s the difference.

Save this and identify which of the four parts you’re still running manually.

I found out a client had signed up through a Slack notification.
I didn’t know them. I hadn’t talked to them.

The intake director handled the entire thing... the call, the follow-up, the close... and I wasn’t involved in a single part of it.

That moment was possible because of a very specific distinction: being the face of your firm and being its salesperson are two different jobs.

Most law firm owners are doing both. Not because they have to, but because they’ve never built anything else. The intake process has always been theirs. So it stays theirs.

If you closed your laptop today and didn’t follow up with a single lead, what would happen to your pipeline? That answer tells you whether you have a system or a person. Right now, that person is probably you.

The free Smooth Scaling masterclass covers how to build a firm that runs without you, including what a sales system actually looks like. Start there.

If you know someone isn’t the right fit, but you keep delaying the conversation, you’re expanding the problem.

This is one of the hardest parts of being a business owner.

06/03/2026

Most business owners are building for a life they haven’t actually designed.
So their days fill up.
Their calendars stay full.
And there’s no.... space. Space to think, to strategize.

Dolce far niente is Italian for “the sweetness of doing nothing”

This is about relaxation as a tool, as a benefit for your goals. Allowing your brain to rest and play, so it can perform at it’s highest.

Time, space, and ease aren’t things you have to earn. They are necessary. They should be designed into your business and your day-to-day.

The owners who experience flexibility and real space didn’t stumble into it. It didn’t just magically happen one day...

They built for it.

If your team comes to you with every question, for every answer... that’s not a team problem. That’s a leadership and structure problem.

I talk about this in my newest podcast episode, ‘Why Your Team Comes To You For Everything (And Why It’s Not Their Fault)’.
