I had the privilege of presenting on adult guardianship law to members of the Dane County Circuit Court Bench today.

We covered a wide range of topics during the hour, including terminology, judicial responsibilities during the hearing, post-adjudication matters, and recent statutory changes and case law.

A special thank you to Comm. Signe Mbainai (a good friend and former mentee) for inviting me and thank you to those who were able to attend for your great questions and for sharing insights with me into guardianship procedures in Dane County.

It is a special privilege, and one I do not take for granted, to be able to teach and to share my experience with others in the court systems.

I had the privilege of presenting on Spendthrift Guardianships to the Northwestern Wisconsin FAST this afternoon.

I was able to share both the legal and procedural framework as well as important considerations and issues regarding this oft misunderstood and underused option in guardianship law.

The 20 or so attendees (by Zoom) included APS workers, representatives of financial institutions, law enforcement officers, other advocates, and at least one corporation counsel.

FAST Teams are multidisciplinary teams of “professionals that collaborate to identify, investigate, and respond to financial exploitation, improve coordination among systems, and strengthen prevention and early intervention efforts.”
