The Supreme Court of the United States upheld birthright citizenship this week, rejecting an executive order issued by President Trump at the start of his second term. In its ruling, the court maintained that virtually all children born in the United States are guaranteed automatic birthright citizenship on constitutional grounds. As of March 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of State has expanded their online presence screening to 14 additional non-immigrant visa categories. Two bills aimed at combating immigration-assistance fraud have gone into effect as of earlier this year. In addition to expanding public education campaigns warning New Yorkers about the scams, the legislation also drastically increases the financial penalties for predatory service providers. Fines now range from $7,500 to $10,000 for a first violation and jump to $18,000 to $20,000 for subsequent offenses.

As of March 9, 2026, street vendors in New York City will no longer be subject to criminal penalties for vending-related offenses like operating without a license. Instead, these violations will result in fines or civil penalties – not criminal charges.

Criminal Law News
Effective August 7, 2025, New York updated its criminal discovery law -- the rules governing how and when prosecutors must share evidence. The amendments establish a 35-day deadline for defendants to challenge the prosecution’s evidence-sharing efforts, and create a detailed test for deciding whether the prosecution acted in good faith. The goal is to reduce technical dismissals while still protecting defendant’s rights to timely evidence.
