Losing a spouse changes everything, including the legal paperwork you and your spouse put in place together. Over time, it helps to check:

• Your will, and who it names to carry out your wishes
• Who is named to help you with finances and healthcare decisions if you are unable
• The beneficiaries on your accounts and policies
• How your home or condo is titled

Some accounts pass directly to the person you have named, but not everything does. If it has been a while since anyone reviewed your plan, we are here to walk through it with you, at your pace.

Lost a spouse? Learn which estate planning documents to update, from your will and power of attorney to beneficiaries and your home's deed. Northern Kentucky elder law.

Take 30 seconds and answer these questions. If you hesitated on any, now is the time to review your plans.

This week is National Estate Planning Week so what better time to check to make sure you have your plans in order.

1️⃣ If you were hospitalized tomorrow and needed someone to make medical decisions for you, do you have someone you trust to do that for you? AND, does that person know you want them to do so?

2️⃣ If you suddenly couldn't manage your finances for a few months or going forward, do you have someone legally designated to manage them for you?

3️⃣ When was the last time your will was updated? Have you had a major life change since it was created or updated?

4️⃣ If you needed long-term care tomorrow, do you know how you would pay for it? Does your family know what you would want? Do you have a way to protect your assets and life savings?

The good news is if you can't answer these questions, we are here to help with straightforward solutions - healthcare power of attorney, financial power of attorney, updated will or trust, and care plans.

October is National Long-Term Care Planning Month 🍂

None of us can predict exactly what the future holds. But we can decide how prepared we’ll be when it arrives.

Many people will need some form of long-term care during their lives, whether that’s help at home, assisted living, or nursing home care. Too often, families start thinking about it only when a crisis hits: a fall, a hospital stay, or a sudden diagnosis. By then, choices can feel rushed and options may be more limited.

Long-term care planning is simply about looking ahead while you still have time to choose. It can help you:

✅ Understand what care options exist and what they may cost
✅ Explore how to pay for care, including Medicaid and other resources
✅ Protect what you’ve worked for and provide for a spouse at home
✅ Put the right legal documents in place so the people you trust can act for you
✅ Spare your family from guessing what you would have wanted

Planning isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about giving yourself and your family peace of mind.

This month is a great time to start the conversation. At Stages Elder Care Law, we help seniors and their families worry less about the legal, care, and financial challenges of aging.

Aging rarely follows a schedule. A fall, a hospital stay, a sudden move to a nursing home: one phone call can change everything for a family, often overnight.

That’s the reality of elder law. Plans that made sense last month may need to change this week. Decisions about care, finances, and legal authority can’t always wait for the next available appointment.

That’s why we build flexibility into how we work. When a family’s situation shifts, we can shift with them, because in this work, timing can make all the difference.

Whether you’re planning ahead or already in the middle of a crisis, we’re here to help you worry less about the legal, care, and financial challenges of aging.

Thursday Thought: A power of attorney is one of the kindest gifts parents can give their family.

It lets someone they trust step in if they ever can't make decisions themselves. And it's simplest to put in place while everyone is healthy and calm.

A gentle way to start: "Mom, Dad, if something ever happened, who would you want helping you?"

We'll share more simple steps at our free seminar, Wednesday, Oct 14 at New Riff Distilling. A few seats left: https://helpyouragingparents.com/
